Credit Reports

By monitoring your credit reports, you may be able to detect fraud and prevent further identity theft against you. The Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act (FACT Act) enables every consumer to request and obtain their credit report for free once every 12 months.

There are three main credit reporting agencies, Equifax, Experian, and Transunion. These three agencies have formed a joint website service called AnnualCreditReport.com, where you can order your credit report.

You should take advantage of your right to obtain your credit report. Inspect it for credit purchases you have not authorized. Look for incorrect information as well; the Public Interest Research Groups 2004 survey reported that 79% of credit reports contain errors, and one in four contained errors serious enough to result in denied credit!
